Miss McNicholas Acting Deputy Head teacher

Miss McNicholas' Career Profile

What attracted you to a career in teaching?

I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I wanted to get into teaching to make a difference in a child’s life. My own love of learning and children’s development make me passionate about teaching.  Teachers from my early education have been a source of inspiration to me and had a positive impact on my want to become a teacher. I wanted to inspire people like my role models did by doing the very best for young people, supporting them to achieve their full potential.

Why did you want to teach at St. Raphael’s Catholic Primary School?

When you walk into any place, you immediately get a ‘feel’ for it. The way I was welcomed on my first visit to St Raphael’s and the friendliness of the children and staff here showed me that there was something special about the school.  There is a strong community feel and an ethos of support for the school from pupils, staff and parents. Over the years, this feeling has been affirmed and every day, I walk into a school that has allowed me to grow in my profession.  More pragmatically; another point that appealed to me was that St Raphael’s is located in Ealing which has inner London weighting.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at the school?

There is so much that I enjoy – I do not know where to begin! I enjoy providing the best standard of learning for each child and enabling them to reach their full potential. I enjoy the support of our parents who work with us together to ensure the best outcomes and wellbeing for our children with an underlying gospel message that is integrated into the overall education of the children.

I joined the team at St Raphael’s in 2009 as a NQT and since then I have developed a wealth of professional skills. I have led PE, English and science across the school which has afforded me the opportunity to work with all members of staff providing feedback, support and training.

In 2014, I was given the opportunity to become a middle leader in school and since then, I have achieved the role of Assistant Headteacher.  Working at St Raphael’s has allowed me to develop both as a teacher and leader. Having such a strong and supportive team around me, has allowed me to recognise my strengths and meant that I have been able to work effectively to ensure my practice is always of a high standard.

What is special about your role in school?

No two days in school are ever the same, and watching the children grow and flourish and become passionate about their learning is a joy to be involved in. Having worked as a school based mentor with many students from local Universities, I have seen the importance of mentoring and coaching teachers in the early stages of their careers. For the more experienced teachers, the continuous professional development is an area that I am equally passionate about, allowing them to become as passionate about their learning as the children are.

What are your future ambitions? What do you hope to achieve during your time in St Raphael’s?

Over the years, my role has been allowed to grow and develop. This is something I want to continue to do. Developing as a teacher is never truly finished and as the role changes, so must we with it. I will continue to learn new methods and approaches to support the development of children in primary education, and enjoy being aware of what the rest of the profession does to achieve this.

Tell us why pupils enjoy coming to St Raphael’s?

The pupils at St Raphael’s enjoy coming to school because of the creative lessons that are planned by our enthusiastic teachers that allow them to challenge themselves and measure their own progress. We are fortunate at St Raphael’s to have 3 specialist teachers for art, music and PE which allows the children time to express their talents in these areas while the teachers use this as their PPA time to further enhance the children’s learning. The children at St Raphael’s are offered a wide range of cross curricular and extracurricular activities in after and out of school to allow them to become the best individuals they can be.
